Wrestlemania was held in the WWE’s Performance Centre with no audience members in attendance this year due to the outbreak of COVID-19. I was really apprehensive about how this would impact the show, given Wrestlemania’s reputation of being the “biggest” entertainment event of the year.
Given the nature of the pandemic, some superstars had to stay at home, naturally this meant that the card had to be altered, but this wasn’t as bad as it would have seemed when the changes were announced.

One of the changes to the card was the Universal Championship match. Roman Reigns had pulled out of the event for health reasons and was replaced by Braun Strowman. This match wasn’t anything special, in my opinion, but it was nice to see Braun finally win this title. He’d been pushed aside in favour of keeping Brock Lesnar’s reign going at the time, so here’s hoping he gets a decent title reign.
Highlights
The FireFly Funhouse was my favourite match on the card. It was wacky from start to finish and added more depth to Bray and his Fiend persona. It had plenty of callbacks to the classic WWF era, as well as the NWO throwback back in the WCW era. John Cena played his part perfectly and Bray was as enigmatic as always.
Being able to talk about Edge in a Wrestlemania match again brings me so much joy. His return at the Royal Rumble was very emotional for me. It’s a shame that his return was during a pandemic, but I digress.
Edge and Randy Orton have amazing on-screen chemistry, this match was brutal from start to finish, but it was a joy to watch these two working together after so long. Edge couldn’t have had a more perfect opponent for his return than Randy Orton.
Thoughts overall
This show turned out to be one of my favourite Wrestlemania’s in recent history. The production staff did very well given their circumstances and still managed to maintain the vibe the show usually would have. The camera operators framed some gorgeous shots, they made great use of close ups to avoid putting emphasis on the fact there were no audience members present. The superstars worked their hardest to put on the matches to the best of their ability.
While some matches were predictable and some could’ve been improved given more time, you have to appreciate the effort, during these uncertain times, they put on a show to entertain their audience. So kudos to everyone involved.
