Directed by Jeff Fowler, written by Pat Casey, and released released March 30th 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the follow-up movie to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020).
With Jim Carrey reprising his role as the eccentric Dr. Robotnik, Ben Shwartz reprising his voice role as the titular hedgehog, and new additions to the cast, for example, Idris Elba voicing Knuckles the Echidna, does this sequel stand out from its pre-decessor, or does it live in its shadow?
9 months following the defeat of Dr Robotnik, Sonic has decided to take on the role of vigilante hero, akin to Batman, finding no success doing so.
Seeing how defeated Sonic is feeling, Tom comforts him by saying his powers will be needed one day, before he and Maddie depart for a wedding.
Sonic plans to have a fun time while he his home alone, but his plans are quickly scuppered by none other than Dr Robotnik and Knuckles, the Echidna.
Luckily, he is swiftly rescued by Tails the Fox, who idolises him.
Can they stop their evil plans?
Going into viewing this movie, I chose to remind myself that my age range is not the target demographic.
Regardless of your age, you will find something in this movie enjoyable.
There are obviously references to things that the target audience will love, even a cameo from YouTuber TBNRFrags!
There are also charming little nods to aspects of the game franchise for adults to get; for example, a coffee shop called “Mean Bean” and a manual shown that wouldn’t look out of place in a retro game case.
Knuckles had a fantastic introduction to the movie; his serious nature meshed well with the doctors eccentric nature.
I thoroughly enjoyed how he was portrayed as a warrior, rather than a dolt as he’s been portrayed in other Sonic media.
The first scuffle between the two reminded me of the first encounter between them in the video game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where Sonic immediately finds himself overpowered by the echidna.
Tails was a wonderful addition to the movie. His admiration for Sonic and watching him grow into a hero in his own right was adorable. His addition also added a new layer to Sonic’s character.
It emphasised his loving and caring nature, and his on-going loyalty to those he loved.
As always, my favourite part of the live-action Sonic movies is the acting of the fantastic Jim Carrey.
His quirky and eccentric acting ability suits the character perfectly.
His presence in the movies is what makes the movies stand out. I wouldn’t oppose the idea of him tKing up the mantle of voicing the character in other forms of Sonc the Hedgehog media.
And on that note, thank you for reading my post!
