Today marks 31 years since the release of my all-time favourite franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog!
In honour of the Blue Blur’s special day, I’ll be sharing my favourite zones from the classic series!

Green Hill Zone – Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
To nobody’s surprise, Green Hill Zone takes the top spot for the first Sonic title. When I think about the franchise in general, my mind always comes back to it.
It’s design, it’s music, the secret paths, and the first encounter with the deplorable egg epitomise, the classic Sonic experience for me.

Casino Night Zone – Sonic the Hedgehog 2
I am annoyed that this stage did not make an appearance in the console version of Sonic Generations, or Sonic Mania. I will never understand its omission, in the latter at least. It is such a fun zone!
The neon in the background, the jazzy soundtrack, the lively and bouncy pinball-esque gameplay, the slot machines. It’s one of the best stages in the Sonic franchise overall!
It did get a pinball stage, and the track was remixed in the console versions of Sonic Generations, so that’s something.

Mushroom Hill Zone – Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 3 and Knuckles was always intended to be one game, so I’ve counted it as one. It took me an unnecessary amount of time to pick my favourite zone from this entry.
I’m a big fan of the colours changing in the background, the springy mushrooms, it’s bouncy soundtrack, and its boss encounters.
Also, this is the first time you’re introduced to the super emeralds. If you’re playing as Sonic, you get a cut scene showing Knuckles’ portal to their domain.
