If you are unfamiliar with who Slender Man is. You can read up on the lore here.

Plot

Four high school friends, Katie, Hallie, Chloe and Wren find a way to summon the slender man, to try and debunk the urban legend surrounding him. Not long after, Katie goes missing. Was Slender Man behind this?

What I Liked About the Movie

The movies cast were great in their roles. Namely, Joey King. For me, they played the part of teenage girls in the digital age very well. Joey King as Wren being the character I enjoyed the most.

I really enjoyed the cinematography in the movie. The jarring camera angles and shakes really added to the manic nature of what the characters were experiencing.

The design of Slender Man itself looked very realistic and very believable. Since the characters origin spawned from an edited photo, it was impressive to see him brought to life in motion.

What I Didn’t Like

There were many plot holes and inconsistencies. Upon looking into the movies development, I found out that parts of the movie were cut and the script was edited. This was due to a horrible event that happened in real life, I won’t go into that here, but Sony’s fear of avoiding controversy scuppered the chance to establish Slender Man as a horror icon on the big screen.

Parts of the movie were either boring, or laughably bad. It made it hard for me to keep the immersion going when I watched it. I found myself losing focus, then having to rewind parts because I missed information.

I wouldn’t recommend watching this movie, unless you are curious about it. It’s frustrating because Slender Man as a concept has potential, but it’d be better suited as a tv series. The script being cut and scenes being removed probably impacted the quality overall, but it is obvious that the movie was released incomplete as a cash grab, aimed at teenagers/young adults invested in the Slender Man lore.
