How One Nerds Brain began
2015 was the start of a really horrible period of time for me, I won’t rehash those stories, but I will tell you that for the few years that followed, I was in a dark place and was struggling with aspects of my life.
After a relationship I wanted didn’t turn out how I wanted, I felt myself spiral further, I neglected my needs, I often isolated myself and I wasted my money on fleeting comfort food, alcohol and stuff along those lines. Around early 2017 I told myself that I needed to do something to get out of the rut I had nestled into, but I didn’t know what.
I started walking around a local park for hours a day playing Pokémon Go at first, but that wasn’t enough, I had to go home and I was straight back to having to find ways to keep my mind distracted. My best friend has a blog, she would talk about how it helped her as a fibromyalgia sufferer and I felt inspired by that.
I’ve struggled with mental health issues throughout my teenage years and my adult life so far, so I originally wanted it to be a place to vent, I also wanted to write about video games, movies and other things that interested me. I struggled to find an identity online because I wasn’t sure who I was a person.
As time went on, I slowly began to understand myself more and my content became a nice distraction, I decided to try and blog consistently in 2018, I think it was around 2019 that Angie at Backlog Crusader commented on one of my posts and told me about the Geek Blogs Unite Facebook page. This helped my blog greatly and I’ve found so much great content to read. I need to stop being as shy and network more, they are great people.
And that’s why the blog exists. It’s been through some changes, but still here!
My advice for new bloggers
Don’t publish something just for the sake of getting a post out
I’ve fallen into this trap many times. I try to stick to my schedule, but sometimes I just can’t think of any content. Writer’s block for you. I’ve pushed content out that I wasn’t happy with, or I found absolutely boring to create.
If your content isn’t appealing to write, imagine how it is to your readers. Skipping a day won’t kill your blog, take the time to find inspiring material. The right topic will come to you!
You can write about more than one topic
I read this on Emily’s post, but I figured I could add my two cents on the subject too. When I initially started my blog, I didn’t know what I wanted to write about, or how to gauge an audience. I googled some advice and read a few articles about finding your “niche”, or stick to a particular theme.
I’ve found my blog has done better since I’ve decided to write about what takes my fancy. I know I have dedicated days for topics, but that’s just how I managed to ease myself into routine. If you’re passionate about what you’re writing about, you’ll find an audience for it.
Take a break if you need to!
Life can be overwhelming sometimes, we all have commitments outside of our blog and sometimes, it can get the better of us.
In my case, my illness can make my day to day life seem like an uphill struggle. I often neglect cleaning, sleeping and responsibilities in general because I feel burnt out, then everything tends to pile up. If this happens to you, take the time to recover. Blogging isn’t the be all, end all and it will be there tomorrow. Your health and needs should always be the priority!
