Spyro the Dragon – The Reignited Trilogy

I have been a gamer for 24 years, one of the games I fondly remember plunging countless hours into was the original Spyro the Dragon on the original PlayStation.
The game was released in 1998, it was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony.
This game held my attention for so long, I’d notice myself going back to it on multiple occasions.

After the success of a Crash Bandicoots revival in the form of The N. Sane Trilogy through Vicarious Visions, Activision decided to remake the original PS1 trilogy of Spyro through Toys for Bob, and it is beyond beautiful.

The screenshot above is the first dragon you encounter in the first world, and it filled me with so much joy seeing this stunningly recreated using the current console generations graphical capability.
I felt like I was 7 years old again starting this game for the first time, taking in the sights and possibilities this world had to offer.

The visuals remind me of Saturday morning cartoons with their colour scheme, the original was obviously a lot worse to look at but what it looks like now is exactly what my 7 year old imagination would see playing the game!

The photo set above even accurately captured how I saw those enemies in the original in my mind! This game had me smiling ear to ear most of the time.
I don’t really have many complaints about this game, Spyro did seem to feel slippery during his charging ability, but I don’t know if that was actually the case, or I just remembered the stiff controls the original would have had, gaming has come a long way and controls have vastly improved, which is great!
The laugh of the little nightmare, pictured below, still annoyed me as much as it did in the original!

Trophy wise, this is simple enough. I did miss the odd collectable, or miss a jump or two during a level, but it’s fun to play.
If you’re a fan of the original, you need to play it. Didn’t play the original? Play it anyway.
Personally, I don’t think Spyro faired too well after his PS1 adventures, I guess Skylanders is perfect for children, or people who are new to the games and who are after a simple experience. If you want to experience Spyro at his best, this collection is for you. It hooked me and became my 30th platinum trophy.

  1. Congrats on the 30th platinum. I think I was more of a crash person growing up but I do remember playing the first Spyro. I might have to grab the Reignited Trilogy and play through them.

  2. I really enjoyed playing Spyro Reignited, but I definitely found his charge attack to be difficult to control. I’m in a similar boat where it’s hard to tell if that’s actually the case or if it’s just different from my childhood memories and therefore harder for me than it should be. Regardless, it did cause some frustrating deaths once in a while.
